Agent Atleta client Maria Sanchez was selected by the New York Empire World Team Tennis franchise in the 2017 WTT Draft, which took place March 14, 2017 on site at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, CA.  The Empire demonstrated their desire to select Sanchez by taking her with the team's second round pick.

Sanchez is expected to primarily play women's doubles and mixed doubles for the Empire this season (July 16-Aug 2).  A veteran of World Team Tennis, Sanchez was the Rookie of the Year in 2012.

The Empire previously announced that all home matches will be played on Court 17 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, home of the U.S. Open.

"I'm really excited to have been selected by the New York Empire in the WTT Draft," Sanchez said.  "I love New York City, and there are few venues in tennis that compare with the  USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center.  I can't wait to join my teammates this summer and experience the energy and atmosphere on Court 17 as we look to compete for a league championship."

Sanchez will be joined on the Empire's roster by Eugenie Bouchard, Mardy Fish, John Isner, and Kirsten Flipkens.  Tennis Hall of Famer Gigi Fernandez will make her WTT debut as the coach of the Empire.

Agent Atleta client Irina Falconi has been granted a main draw wild card at the 2017 BNP Paribas Open.  First-year Tournament Director Tommy Haas gave Falconi the nod, perhaps appreciating the difficulties of returning to action on the tour following a major injury.

Falconi suffered a season-ending toe injury after the U.S. Open last fall, forcing the American to end her season prematurely.  Prior to the injury, Falconi had been enjoying a stellar season in which she reached a career-high ranking No. 63, and captured her first career WTA title in Bogota.

Haas has reached legendary status for his ability to overcome severe injuries and return to top form, a feat he achieved on multiple occasions throughout his prolific career.

Despite missing the final three months of the 2017 Tour Calendar, Falconi managed to finish inside the Top 100 for the second consecutive year, the third such finish of her career.

"I am grateful to Mr. Haas for the Wild Card," said Falconi.  "The BNP Paribas Open is easily one of the best events on tour, and I am elated to be able to compete in the main draw."
